Berny was wandering around alone on the street when he immediately caught the eye of our team during the DCC 50+ visit tour. The enormous skin lesions on the dog's back could not be overlooked.
It was immediately clear that he needed urgent medical attention. The young dog had probably not been living on the streets for very long. It is quite possible that his owners had heartlessly abandoned him because of his illness.
As our dog catchers were occupied elsewhere, the team did not hesitate. They improvised a leash for the very friendly dog and quickly lifted him into a tuk-tuk. Given the severity of his skin condition, we did not want to waste any time. Berny was taken straight to the clinic for examination – and the diagnosis was devastating: Berny was most likely suffering from a very severe form of skin cancer.
Of course, Berny received medical care and treatment. We were not willing to give up on the nearly three-year-old male dog. Berny stayed with us and from then on lived on the clinic grounds. This allowed us to monitor his condition closely and provide immediate treatment whenever necessary.
Sadly, Berny’s illness continued to progress. In June 2026, as a result of his cancer, he suffered severe liver and kidney failure, and we were forced to make the heartbreaking decision to let him go.
Run free, dear Berny, and may you find your way safely to the great dog meadow beyond – where there is no pain, only endless dog biscuits. We will never forget you, dear friend.
