I am currently on-site in Sri Lanka, experiencing firsthand every day how urgently our work is needed. The dogs and cats living here require not only food and care but also protection, safety, and loving attention. It is moving to see even the most vulnerable animals gradually regain trust and discover new joy in life. With this newsletter, I want to give you an insight into what we have achieved together over the past months – and the challenges we are currently facing.
 

A Brief Look Back at the First Quarter of 2026

The first quarter of 2026 was once again very busy for the Dog Care Clinic team. We experienced a surge in puppies and ensured every day that the tiniest ones were safely cared for. At the same time, we were able to perform nearly 3,000 spay and neuter procedures to sustainably reduce the street animal population.

In our operating room, 150 surgical procedures were successfully carried out, and overall, we provided over 21,000 treatments for street and owned animals. 4,500 vaccinations helped contain diseases and ensure the long-term health of the animals.

Time and again, we encounter cases of severe neglect and abuse that push us emotionally to our limits and make us question whether we can continue. Yet, the moments when animals gradually regain trust and open up give us renewed strength and motivation – showing us that every effort, no matter how great, is worth it and that we must keep going.

Current Challenges
We are currently facing enormous challenges: the global political situation is causing shortages and drastic price increases. The new war in the Middle East has led to fuel and gas shortages – panic buying and black market prices are making everyday life extremely expensive. At the same time, the Strait of Hormuz is blocked, shipments are no longer reaching Sri Lanka, and flights for sponsors, volunteers, and visitors are being canceled. An important part of our funding – the guest accommodations – is therefore completely lost.

On top of that comes the dry season: the water supply is unstable, and the government regularly shuts it off. For a clinic that cares for injured, sick, and homeless dogs every day, this is an existential challenge. No water means no hygiene, no drinking water, and no cleaning of enclosures or the operating room.

To keep operations running, we have to purchase 2 to 3 water tanks daily. Each tank holds nearly 5,000 liters and costs 8,000 rupees – that’s up to 24,000 rupees per day (around €75) just for water.

Spring Fundraising Marathon on March 29:
A Roof for Our Dogs

We urgently need a covered feeding area to provide 450 rescued dogs with daily shelter, reliable meals, and a basic level of safety.
A dry, rain-protected feeding space is especially vital for the many elderly and sick animals.
Every contribution helps keep these animals healthy – rain or shine. Just €1 secures a large screw, €25 secures half a square meter of roofing, and €75 secures one square meter of foundation for our weather-protected feeding area.

Our project is participating in the Spring Fundraising Marathon – a special campaign where every donation counts. The more donations our project receives during the campaign period, the larger our share of the €10,000 marathon budget provided by betterplace.org.

How it works: Every donation made to our project on March 29 increases our share of the total budget. For example: if we collect 5% of all donations, we receive an additional 5% of the campaign budget!

Our Betterplace Fundraising Project

For the campaign, all individual donations made to our project on betterplace.org on March 29, 2026, between 9:00 AM and 11:59 PM will count. A total campaign budget of €10,000 is available for this fundraising marathon. At the end of the campaign, the budget will be distributed proportionally: our project’s total donations will be compared to the total donations of all participating projects during the campaign period. Based on this share, we will receive additional funds from the campaign pool. For example, if our project accounts for 5% of the total donations, we will receive an additional 5% of the campaign budget, i.e., €500.
 

Current Cases and Animals in Need
Here, we would like to introduce you to some of our current emergencies that have been admitted to us in recent weeks. All of the animals are either seriously ill or – like Mathilda’s puppies – still too weak and small to survive without support. We are currently reaching our limits and cannot manage this task without your help. Please support us in helping these animals, either through a donation or by sponsoring one. Chico

Puppy boy Chico has mange; his skin is raw and inflamed, and most of his fur has fallen out.
Chico trembles and reacts strongly to other dogs because he is terrified.

Abby

Puppy girl Abby was found lying on the ground and was unable to move.
She was likely in an accident and is also extremely emaciated.
But Abby is a strong little fighter.

 
Mathilda's Puppies

Mathilda suffered from severe seizures. The last one was so intense that she did not survive.
She left behind six puppies, one of whom has already crossed the rainbow bridge. We are now raising five tiny lives with a bottle.

Enzo

Labrador boy Enzo suffered from maggot-infested wounds on his tail and right hind leg. Unfortunately, his tail had to be amputated. Enzo was simply discarded by his owners like garbage.

Elias
We found Elias in a terrible condition: emaciated, covered in infected wounds, with a widespread rash over his body, and too weak to stand. The old chain around his neck was a sign of neglect by his “family.” We didn’t know if he would make it – but Elias fought. Today, he is barely recognizable and has found his forever home at the DCC.

Glucks
Glucks was admitted to us in December 2025. He was suffering from a severe fungal infection and was completely emaciated. Thanks to the dedication of our team and your support, Glucks is now doing very well. He feels perfectly at home with us and, due to his advanced age, will remain with us forever.

Tupfel
We also met Tupfel in December 2025 – severely weakened, with a skin rash, a fungal infection, and a deep wound on his front leg. With lots of care and love, he has recovered: his fur has grown back, his skin has healed, and his zest for life has returned. Tupfel has found a permanent home full of love and security with us.
