Lucia is one of the many abandoned and injured pedigree dogs we rescue from the streets of Sri Lanka every single day.
A local resident informed us about an injured female Dobermann – abandoned by her owner with a terrible, maggot-infested wound in her ear.
We didn’t even want to imagine the pain she must have endured. We rescued her and named her Lucia.
It is painfully clear that Lucia once had an owner – someone who acquired a pedigree female dog as a status symbol and breeding machine, only to abandon her later. Sadly, this is all too common in Sri Lanka.
Instead of taking her to a veterinarian, she was thrown out onto the streets to die. In her owner's eyes, she had lost all value because of the severe wound to her ear.
Lucia is now safe with us. We did everything we could to help her recover and regain her strength. Unfortunately, we were unable to save her right ear.
Even though Lucia is a pedigree dog, she is now considered worthless in Sri Lanka because of her amputated ear – making her chances of ever finding a loving home extremely slim.
That is why Lucia will remain with us at the Dog Care Clinic for the rest of her life. Here, her supposed "flaw" means nothing. Here, she is cared for with love and allowed to live a dignified dog life in a wonderful pack.
