One day, we received a message from a tourist who informed us about a severely neglected dog in Tangalle, approximately 60 kilometers away. Although this location lies well outside our usual area of operation, our team did not hesitate and set off immediately. What we encountered on site was deeply distressing: a severely emaciated male dog, frightened and weakened, his body covered with infections and open wounds. That he was still alive at that point seemed almost unimaginable. His owners had kept him on a short chain and left him to his fate. The sight left us speechless.
The dog, whom we named Elias, was taken straight to the DCC and received immediate medical treatment. He was suffering from babesiosis and demodicosis and was so weakened that he could barely stand. His condition was life-threatening.
However, Elias showed an extraordinary will to live. He began eating and gradually started to recover from the severe suffering he had endured.
Today, Elias is a healthy and beautiful dog with a shiny black coat and a friendly, calm nature. Returning him to his former, cruel owners is, of course, out of the question. Due to his medical history, he will remain permanently in our care. Elias now lives with our vet assistant Dilusha.
