Labrador Nele was simply abandoned at the gates of the DCC. Unfortunately, we know nothing about her past, but we assume that, as a purebred dog, she was abused as a breeding machine to produce lucrative offspring. When her battered body grew weaker and weaker, this poor soul was cold-heartedly disposed of in this way. Sadly, this story is repeated almost daily in Sri Lanka.
Nele was extremely emaciated and weakened, and our veterinary team also diagnosed her with babesiosis. We did not even want to imagine what else this poor dog may have had to endure.
After we had nursed Nele back to health, we searched for a new home for her. Unfortunately, however, no one showed any interest in the beautiful girl. We therefore admitted her into our DCC50+ program. Through this program, we place dogs with needy or disabled locals who, in return for adopting one of our protégés, receive a small monthly pension from us. In this way, we create capacity at the DCC premises, and the dogs not only receive a loving home but also serve locally as ambassadors for healthy human–dog relationships.
Of course, we will also cover Nele’s medical care for the rest of her life.
