It was a very special moment when Henry was born on 4/10/22. It is the first calf that saw the light of day under the protection of the DCC. We rescued Henry's mother Senta from the slaughterhouse almost a year earlier. She was already in line to be executed. When Senta came to us, the cow area was not yet fenced off and since the cows roam freely in Sri Lanka, a bull gained access one night and mounted Senta. Almost 10 months later she gave birth to her healthy calf.
Henry's birth weight was 29 kg. We will of course keep him with us forever so he can live a cared for happy life. However, raising a young bull involves high costs.
Completely unexpected, Henry fell ill in mid-May. He had a high fever and severe nasal discharge, which we treated. Unfortunately, we were unable to find the exact cause with the resources available to us. Henry died a few days after the onset of symptoms. His mother Senta cried for hours in pain for her lost calf. We are also incredibly sad that Henry was only with us for such a short time.
